GPF Interest rate 8.8 % from 2012-13

In a move which will benefit millions of employees, the government has hiked interest rate on contributions to General Provident Fund (GPF) and other similar funds to 8.8 per cent for 2012-13.
The interest rate on such funds was 8.6 per cent during December 2011-March 2012 period, while it was 8 per cent for April-November 2011.
"It is announced ... that during the year 2012-13, accumulations at the credit of subscribers to the General Provident Fund and other similar funds shall carry interest at the rate of 8.8 per cent per annum," the Finance Ministry said.
The benefit of increased interest rate will be available to subscribers of Contributory Provident Fund (India), All India Services Provident Fund, State Railway Provident Fund and General Provident Fund (Defence Services).
Contributors to Indian Ordnance Department Provident Fund, Indian Ordnance Factories Workmen's Provident Fund, Indian Naval Dockyard Workmen's Provident Fund, Defence Services Officers Provident Fund and Armed Forces Personnel Provident Fund will also benefit from the move.
Rate of interest on GPF is generally fixed after taking into consideration the average secondary market yields on government securities of similar maturity.

have been issued by D.G Posts clarifying that the quarters which are
within the premises/buildings of the post offices need only be declared
as post attached quarters which the PM/SPMs are bound to occupy. In
other cases the quarters which are not in the premises/buildings of all
the post offices, it may be left to the discretion of the concerned
PMs/SPMs whether to accept or not accept such quarters.

Hon Mos assured favorable orders will be issued within 15 days .In the Welfare Board Meeting some positive decision were taken in favour of GDS .

Directorate has issued revised procedure for direct recruitment of Postal Assistants/Sorting Assistants. Following are the highlights:
Educational Qualification: 10+2 pass with at least 60% marks, 55%marks for OBC, 45% marks for SC/STAge Limit: 18-27 (5 year relaxation for SC/ST candidates, 3 years for OBC candidates)
Pattern of Examination: Total Marks 100
Part A: General Knowledge - 25 marks
Part B: Mathematics - 25 marks
Part C: English - 25 marks
Part D: Reasoning Ability - 25 marks
Total duration of Aptitude Test-- 2 hours
Minimum Marks to obtain A/B/C/D - 10 marks in each part
Minimum Marks aggregate - 40 % marks for OC, 33% marks for SC/ST, 37 % marks for OBC
Computer Typing test: 15 minutes for typing and 15 minutes for data entry
No weightage of marks secured by the candidates in 10+2 class will be given while preparing merit list.
A common merit list for the whole circle will be prepared . Candidates can indicate their perference for more than one division. Thereafter candidates will be allocated divisions as [er the preference based on their position in the merit list.

Moving a step closer to setting up a banking business, the Department of
Posts has started scouting for a consultancy firm to prepare a road map
for the proposed ‘Post Bank of India' (PBI).
The Department has already carried out a feasibility study for setting
up Post Bank of India and has invited expression of interest from
consultancy firms — domestic or foreign — to finalise the plans for the
bank.
The DoP, according to an official document, “intends to obtain approval
from the Cabinet and licence from RBI for creation of a full-fledged
bank (PBI).”
The consultancy firm will provide inputs on issues such as
organisational structure of PBI, requirement of seed money and its
relationship with post offices.
Rural-centred
The proposed PBI will provide banking services, including accepting of
deposits from the public for the purpose of lending or investment.
The PBI will aim to “provide banking services with special focus on
rural areas... ride on the Core Banking Solution which is proposed to be
provided in all the post offices.”
PBI will also become an additional source of revenue generation for the
DoP, besides creating a platform for financial inclusion programme of
the Government.
Currently, DoP operates seven small savings schemes through a network of
1.54 lakh post offices and collects huge amounts for both State and
Central Governments. It has over 250 million account holders.
In addition to deposit schemes, the PBI will provide loans to general public and corporates such as any regular bank.
The DoP also runs a Post Office Savings Bank, the oldest and largest banking institution in the country.
There are 171 commercial banks in the country.
Of the 93,080 bank branches, only 36.10 per cent are in rural areas and
24.76 per cent in semi-urban areas. The all-India average population
served per branch is 13,503.
On the other hand, out of 1.55 lakh post offices, 89.8 per cent (1.39
lakh) are in rural areas covering an average population of 5,992 a post
office.
